Colts have good news on TE Will Mallory's injury

INDIANAPOLIS — The Colts could get another receiving option back soon; although it’s an option whose path to considerable playing time is blocked.

Indianapolis is activating the 21-day practice window for tight end Will Mallory to return from injured reserve.

Mallory, who turned in an excellent training camp as a receiving option at tight end, was placed on injured reserve after suffering a thumb injury in August.

“We’ll see how the week goes,” Indianapolis head coach Shane Steichen said. “It’s been a while since he’s been practice, so we’ll get him out there today, get him running around, and we’ll go from there.”

Finding a place for Mallory in the offense has been difficult for the Colts since the team drafted Tyler Warren in the first round.

Mallory’s a receiving-first option, and Warren gets the lion’s share of those snaps in the offense.

Warren has played 90% of the team’s offensive snaps, after playing 84% as a rookie. Mallory was on the active roster for the entire 2025 season, and he played in only two games because of the presence of Warren.

Making matters worse, Mallory plays a role that has already been squeezed by the absence of Alec Pierce. Indianapolis quarterback Daniel Jones is averaging a paltry 5.7 yards per attempt, struggling to get completions against defenses that no longer have to respect the deep bal.

If Mallory gets a chance, he’s proven to be sure-handed on short and intermediate routes.

But the question is whether he’ll get that opportunity.
