The piece was penned by Candice Buckner, who called for the Fever to let Cunningham go, as her off-court antics and comments were bringing unnecessary attention to the team.
Given the polarising figure Cunningham has become, Buckner received a lot of backlash for her op-ed, with Enes Kanter being the latest to defend the WNBA star.
Enes Kanter calls out NY Times reporter for ‘attacking’ Sophie Cunningham
Taking to social media to respond to Candice Buckner’s piece for The Athletic, Enes Kanter shut down the criticism she had to offer.
Kanter suggested that Cunningham should be respected the same way LeBron James, Colin Kaepernick, or Stephen Curry are for speaking about political issues.
“A woman attacking another woman for standing up for women. All Sophie Cunningham said was that biological men should stay out of women’s sports and she answered honestly, something too many of her colleagues are too afraid to do,” Kanter wrote on X.
“When Colin Kaepernick, Steph Curry, Steve Kerr, or LeBron James speak out on political issues, they’re celebrated for their courage. Sophie Cunningham exercised her First Amendment rights, and now she could potentially be blackballed by the WNBA. The double standard is obvious.”
Cunningham became a lightning rod in the WNBA for her comments about wanting to keep trans athletes out of the WNBA.
The trans athlete discourse is one of the most polarising topics in the United States today. So naturally, she became a hated figure for some fans, while an outspoken hero for others.
Cunningham’s comments did draw a lot of attention towards the Fever, with supporters rallying behind Cunningham’s team and critics wanting to see them fail.
The Fever’s first-round loss in the WNBA playoffs garnered a lot of attention, as many tuned in to see whether the Fever’s off-court antics could compare to their play on the court.
Cunningham had a decent season with the Fever, coming off the bench to deliver at a high level. While her supporters tried to portray Cunningham as a high-level player, it was clear for many to see that she was just a solid role player who could provide at a high level.
