Weather Report: Severe thunderstorms hit six provinces today

Tuesday, 29 September’s Weather Report shows a wet and stormy start to the day across much of the country.
Showers and thundershowers are spreading over Gauteng, the Free State, Limpopo, North West and the Northern Cape.

The South African Weather Service (SAWS) has issued a Yellow Level 2 warning for severe thunderstorms today.
It’s capable of producing heavy downpours, strong winds, hail and excessive lightning.
The warning covers North West, Gauteng, Mpumalanga, Limpopo, Free State and the Northern Cape.
Gauteng can expect cloudy and cold weather today. It will be cool in the extreme north.
WHERE THE THUNDERSTORM WARNING IS HITTING HARDEST
North West faces cloudy, windy and cool weather, with scattered showers and thundershowers.
SAWS has specifically flagged Mamusa, Mahikeng, Rustenburg and Tswelopele for severe thunderstorm warnings today.
Mpumalanga and Limpopo are also covered under today’s provincial warning, with similarly unsettled, showery conditions expected across both provinces.
The Free State stays cloudy and cold. Isolated showers and thundershowers are expected, scattered over the south-western and south-central parts.
The Northern Cape sees a mixed picture today.
Kimberley can expect showers and thundershowers, reaching 26°C.
Upington stays mostly clear at 29°C, while Springbok turns partly cloudy at 27°C, and De Aar stays partly cloudy at 23°C.
WHY THE COAST IS SEEING A CALMER DAY
The Eastern Cape stays partly cloudy and cool south of the escarpment, a far calmer picture than the interior.
The Western Cape enjoys clear skies today.
Cape Town reaches 26°C, Stellenbosch hits 25°C, and Paarl climbs to 28°C.
George stays partly cloudy at 19°C.
KwaZulu-Natal sees slight rain in Durban, reaching 19°C.
Richards Bay stays partly cloudy at 31°C, while Newcastle faces showers and thundershowers at 29°C.
It’s a genuinely mixed day, wet and stormy across the interior, but calm and even sunny along both coasts.
Worth keeping a close eye on local updates if you’re anywhere near North West, Gauteng, Mpumalanga, Limpopo, the Free State or the Northern Cape today.
