The Denver Nuggets, in dire need of some more scoring punch and depth amid a tough offseason in which they lost Peyton Watson to the Cleveland Cavaliers, brought in veteran forward DeMar DeRozan on a veteran minimum. With the team also losing Tim Hardaway Jr., Jonas Valanciunas, and Bruce Brown, DeRozan figures to be an integral piece for the Nuggets this year as they try to compete for a title.

While DeRozan is already 37 years of age, he still has a lot of gas left in the tank. He averaged 18.4 points per game last season, and while his fit alongside Nikola Jokic doesn’t appear to be that intuitive, he can lead bench units and commandeer the offense whenever Jokic has to take a breather.

But above anything else, the Nuggets believe that he’s going to be a valuable member of the locker room — with Aaron Gordon signaling how important DeRozan’s leadership will be for this squad.

“I’ve been watching him since I was young. 10 years old. He was that dude. DeMar DeRozan was that dude. He still is. All-time great. All-time bucket-getter. When things get stymied, he’s going to be able to score for us,” Gordon said during Media Day on Monday, via NBA TV on X. “He’s going to be a veteran leader for us.”

At this point of his career, DeRozan is just looking for a chance to compete for a championship. He hasn’t been with a legitimate title-contender since his days with the Toronto Raptors, so knowing that he’s aging, he might give it his all while viewing this as a real shot at competing for a title.

DeRozan at least gives the team another self-sufficient scorer, giving the Nuggets a different dimension to prevent them from being overreliant on Jokic and Jamal Murray to generate good looks.

This will be DeRozan’s first time to come off the bench on a full-time basis (there is no way he starts over Christian Braun or Cameron Johnson), so it will be interesting to see how he adapts to his new role in the Mile High City.
