Nick Sirianni expresses remorse for profane reaction to Jalen Hurts hit: 'I didn't like how I handled that'

Philadelphia Eagles head coach Nick Sirianni hated to see quarterback Jalen Hurts briefly leave Monday night's game against the Chicago Bears. Sirianni let that be known during the contest, and it resulted in a clip in which the coach appeared to direct a not-so-safe-for-work word at an opposing player.

After the game, Sirianni said he was remorseful for his reaction, adding that he let his "emotions get the best of me,' per Pro Football Talk.

"You want to always fight for your players and protect your players," Sirianni said. "I always come away when I have a moment like that with remorse. 'Man, I shouldn't have let my emotions get the best of me.' Those guys are out there trying to make a play. It was close on the sideline. It ended up being a penalty, obviously you never want to see your quarterback get hit like that. But it's in the heat of the moment, I know nobody is trying to hurt anybody out there, and I always have remorse when I act that way.

"But I always love fighting for our players. I love our guys. So the emotion of the game probably got the better of me today and I have to learn from that. In that particular moment I have to be more steady in that situation. Be able to move on and go to the next play. I didn't like how I handled that."

Sirianni's outburst came with roughly 8:30 to go in the second quarter. With the Eagles driving down the field after a failed fourth-down conversion by the Bears, Hurts scrambled away from pressure trying to find the first-down marker.

As Hurts reached the sideline, Bears linebacker D'Marco Jackson smacked Hurts in the side of the helmet for a brutal hit. While that would have normally resulted in a significant yardage gain for the Eagles, Jackson's hit was offset by an offensive holding call, resulting in the teams replaying the down.

Except Hurts wasn’t allowed to take part in the next play. Due to the nature of the hit, Hurts had to leave the contest to be examined for a possible concussion. That's when cameras captured Sirianni yelling a less than savory word at Jackson.

Sirianni was ultimately pretty right to be upset. With Hurts still out of the game a few plays later, Eagles backup Andy Dalton threw an interception in the end zone to halt the Eagles' drive. That proved to be the team's final shot to score in what was eventually a 27-7 victory by the Bears.

Hurts did clear all concussion evaluations and was back on the field on the team's next drive. It wasn't enough to help the Eagles make it a competitive game. Hurts finished the contest 16 of 25 for 153 yards and an interception. He did, however, score the Eagles' only offensive points, rushing in a score from the 1-yard line just before halftime.

Hurts' struggles, and the loss to the Case Keenum-led Bears, should make for a long week in Philadelphia. While Sirianni might get points from the locals for his reaction to his quarterback taking a big hit, that's unlikely to outweigh the criticism Sirianni will face after his team was blown out by a third-string quarterback.
