Sports bars open Chiefs season with watch parties

KANSAS CITY, Mo. -- Fans who have gotten used to the Kansas City Chiefs playing in February had a lengthy wait for the start of the NFL season and Chiefs home opener taking place on Monday Night Football.

The beginning of another Chiefs season is also welcome news for local sports bars and restaurants. After an unexpected down year, there's plenty of reason for optimism in Chiefs Kingdom.

"I expect a lot of great things. I think the addition of (Kenneth) Walker the running back is going to be huge. It's going to open up the passing game. We are going to see Mahomes like we are used to seeing him," Chad Krausse said.

As the Chiefs kick off the 2026 road to redemption, fans said if they can't be at the stadium, they still want to be part of the crowd and the action.

"The excitement of everything, everybody is just one big family, I feel like one big team. Everyone just loves celebrating , everyone just gets up high fives, a lot of fun," Karson Cox said.

But as Chiefs fans know, it's not just the game, but also the tailgate experience. At Captain's Sports Lounge, their goal is to bring Arrowhead's gameday to the Northland, whether the Chiefs are at home or on the road.

"So, we've got a football toss, I've got cornhole, ladder ball, beer pong. We've got a hype dee jay who's going to do a 2-hour tailgate on the front end," manager Tammy Taylor said.

The Chiefs are big business for sports bars and seating is usually in high demand.

"There's times for noon games I'll get here at 9 a.m. to set up and there's people waiting outside because they want to lock in that table," Taylor said.

So, this year Captain's is selling season tickets for gameday tailgates. Those tickets start at $469 for a 4-top table maxing out at $809 for a reserved 8-top table for the season.

It comes with a tailgate pass with savings on bar tabs and food and drink specials. Fans at the watch party said they hope they will once again be part of something special in Chiefs Kingdom.

"I believe in it. I think we are going to go to the Super Bowl again this year and every year after," Cox said.
