Top outfielder recruit, Brownsburg junior Canyon Koonce commits to SEC program

Brownsburg outfielder Canyon Koonce has dreams of playing in the major leagues, and he made his college commitment with an eye toward reaching his goal.
Koonce committed to Vanderbilt on Wednesday, as the allure of playing in the Southeastern Conference and the Commodores' strong player development program attracted the sweet-swinging lefty. Koonce, a 6-foot, 175-pound rising junior in the No. 2-rated player in Indiana and the 60th overall recruit in the 2028 class per Prep Baseball Report.

As a sophomore, Koonce batted .367 with 10 RBIs, seven doubles, 20 runs scored, 11 stolen bases and eight walks to just seven strikeouts in 24 games.
Schools can reach out to 2028 recruits starting Aug. 1. Koonce spent the first week of August playing in the Area Code Games in Long Beach, California in front of numerous college and professional scouts. Koonce opened eyes at the event going 6-for-14 with a triple and only one strikeout.
Koonce said he heard from Vanderbilt shortly after his strong showing in California. He took an official visit to campus on Thursday and committed six days later.
“I think if you would have asked me about five years ago where I wanted to play college baseball, I would have said Vanderbilt," Koonce said. "Being able to commit here was definitely a full circle moment for me. Ultimately, I just felt like Vanderbilt was the place that I wanted to play my college baseball at, and where I felt at home. Also, it's a four-hour drive and a 45-minute flight, so my family can come down and see me virtually whenever. So, it was just really a perfect fit.”
Koonce is the latest in what is becoming an Indiana to SEC pipeline. Class of 2026 players Center Grove right-handed pitcher Gannon Grant (Tennessee), Mooresville RHP Hudson DeVaughan (Alabama), Shelbyville RHP Aiden Smith (Kentucky) and Guerin Catholic RHP Tate Troxell (Alabama) are all heading to the SEC to continue their baseball careers. Zionsville lefty Davis Moore will be Koonce's future teammate at Vanderbilt. Moore's teammate at Zionsville, former Fort Wayne Snider standout shortstop Isaiah Snavely and Center Grove switch-hitting outfielder Drake McClurg will be heading to Texas A&M next year. Fellow 2028 recruit Gavin McGee (formerly Roncalli now at P27 Baseball Academy) is also heading to the SEC after committing to Kentucky last month.
Koonce said he could not pass up a chance to compete against the best of the best in the SEC. Under coach Tim Corbin, Vanderbilt has become a consistent College World Series contender while producing 20 first-round picks in the MLB Draft.
Koonce said the recruiting process was stressful at times, but after narrowing down his list last month, Vanderbilt offered everything he was looking for in a college baseball program.
"I'm going to be seeing the best pitchers in college baseball, so I’m definitely going to see pretty early on what I'm capable of, what I need to work on, and how I'm going to get better as a baseball player," Koonce said.
"The ultimate goal is to play in the MLB. So obviously, I want to go to Vanderbilt, and I want to win a national championship. But at the same time, I want to develop and accomplish the goal of playing in the big leagues. So, I think this is the first steppingstone in seeing where I measure up and stack up against the best players in the country.”
