‘That could kill her’: Fox News calls for WNBA star to be suspended for year after ‘targeting’ Sophie Cunningham

The Indiana Fever have had anything but a drama-free 2026 campaign. The season started with headlines about superstar point guard Caitlin Clark’s inconsistent play on the floor and the visible frustration that stemmed from it. However, as of late, the Fever-related headlines have been in large part focused on reserve guard Sophie Cunningham.
In an ESPN profile published on July 21, Cunningham commented that she feels it’s important to “protect women’s sports” by preventing transgender girls from competing with and against other girls. The comments sparked a nationwide controversy and a debate that is still raging.

However, the most recent controversy involving Cunningham involves something that happened on the court. In Indiana’s win over the Chicago Sky, Cunningham was struck in the face by Sky guard DiJonai Carrington while attempting a layup in transition. After video review, Carrington was assessed a flagrant 2 foul and ejected from the game. While in the locker room, she made it clear what she thinks was at play in her ejection ruling.
“WHITE PRIVILEGE,” Carrington posted on Threads.
“This is horrible for the league.”
Fox News anchor Joe Concha wants league commissioner Cathy Engelbert to punish Carrington severely for the incident.
“Punch in the throat. That could kill her, right?” Concha asked on Saturday night. “And the WNBA, right, the people that run that league, if you’re Dijonay here and you have a foul like that, I don’t want to hear about, okay, that’s a flagrant 2 and you get this sort of fine. She should be suspended for the rest of the season because this isn’t, as you said, Tommy, a whoops. This is intentional.

“I don’t want to hear ‘that’s a flagrant 2.’ She should be SUSPENDED for the rest of the SEASON! This is INTENTIONAL.”

“This was targeting Sophie Cunningham. And I don’t care if the player’s white or black. It does not matter.
When you do this to somebody, this is horrible for the league. Obviously, this was done because Sophie Cunningham stood up for women, saying that men shouldn’t play against women in sports because there is, obviously, a chromosome advantage, just like you see with steroids, a chemical advantage.”
Stephanie White disagrees
Ironically, Cunningham’s head coach, Stephanie White, does not feel Carrington had any malicious intent.
“Look, it was a hard foul,” White said. “It did happen, and I thought it was the right call. One of the things about [Carrington] is that she’s going to play her butt off, man. She’s going to compete. Nobody’s going to go walking in for a layup. I don’t oppose the hard foul, but I also don’t think that she intentionally went for the neck.”
For her part, Cunningham thinks Carrington made the hard foul as an attention-seeking maneuver.
“I wasn’t even upset,” Cunningham said after the game. “I mean, I popped up. I’m not going to let anyone just do that to me. I think everyone knows that. I think that’s why she did it, because she wants attention. I mean, s—, like, people have started craving attention. Like, go get it somewhere else. Go do something good in the world, I don’t know.”
The Sky and Fever will face off again on August 23 in what’s sure to be must-see TV.
