Cowboys Camp: Schottenheimer Scouts 'Exciting' TE Room With 'Uncoverable' UDFA Standing Out

The Dallas Cowboys tight end room was an interesting watch as training camp began in Oxnard.

The depth chart is interesting with Jake Ferguson TE1, and behind him, Brevyn Spann-Ford and Luke Schoonmaker are the other weapons for Dak Prescott.
For most, Spann-Ford has usurped Schoonmaker to be the backup tight end, and as we are over a week into camp, that seems like it is now set.
Ferguson has put together good days of production in the passing game, so too Spann-Ford, while Schoonmaker continues to be fine, without really standing out, which, entering the final year of his rookie contract, isn't ideal.

But how has head coach Brian Schottenheimer seen the tight end room so far in Oxnard?
"We all know Fergie, Brev is really developing, he's always been a tough [expletive]," Schottenheimer said. "He's always been a guy with incredible play style, but he's developing his ability in the passing game, which is huge. Schoony, he's learned to take care of his body with his routine.
"He is really a three-down tight end that can do a lot of things in the running game. He's got great vertical speed. There's things that we will use him on differently this year than we did maybe in years past."
That takes care of the top of the depth chart, but below them, there is some noise beginning to be heard.
UDFA's Michael Trigg and DJ Rogers have drawn notice for their talents, making play after play in Oxnard.

We know of Trigg's athleticism and Rogers' ability with ball in hand, and Schottenheimer is excited at what the pair has done so far
"You watch Trigg in one-on-ones and he's basically uncoverable," Schottenheimer added "Now, he's swimming a little bit like most of these young guys do, but the talent jumps off.
"DJ Rogers has been outstanding. He's made two or three plays every day in both running game and passing game that gets you excited."
So, the tight end room is shaping up nicely, and with Trigg and Rogers pushing hard to make the roster, and at worst, a place on the practice squad, there is plenty to watch for over the coming weeks.
The top of the depth chart is in good order, and below them are two hungry UDFA's determined to make their mark.
And going by Schottenheimer's comments, they are well on their way.
