The Republic of Ireland forward enjoyed an impressive spell with the Lancashire outfit last season after joining on loan from the Scottish champions.
Kenny quickly established himself as an important figure in Schumacher’s side, contributing six goals and three assists as Bolton booked their place in the League One play-offs before ultimately securing promotion to the Championship.
His immediate future at Celtic, however, remains uncertain heading into the closing weeks of the transfer window.
An injury has prevented the striker from featuring during the opening stages of the Hoops’ campaign, while increased competition in attack could make regular opportunities difficult to come by once he returns to fitness.
Martin O’Neill has already strengthened his forward options considerably this summer, potentially leaving Kenny with a decision to make over where his future lies.
Bolton would appear to provide one potential route away from Celtic, with Schumacher making no secret of how highly he rates the 23-year-old.
However, the Wanderers boss conceded there are several unanswered questions surrounding both Celtic’s plans for Kenny and whether Bolton would have the finances required to bring him back to the club.
Asked by BBC Radio Manchester if another move for the striker could materialise before the deadline, Schumacher said: “Who knows?
“I’ve spoken openly and not hidden the fact that I thought Johnny did a great job for us last season.
“He was a real bonus for us, a plus when we signed him in January.
“He was a player that I tried to sign last summer, didn’t manage to happen because Celtic needed him to stay in their squad.
“We managed to get him in January; he came in, made a huge impact, scored some really important goals for us, got some assists.
“He’s a player who I’ve said I would love to work with again because he was a brilliant character.
“Now, whether we can make that happen again, I’m not sure. I don’t know whether we can financially afford it.
“I don’t know whether he will be available from Celtic in whatever department, on loan or on a permanent.
“We’re not sure, but as I say, he’s a player I would love to work with again.”
