Facing the biggest challenge of his career, by his own request, the rising star dominated the veteran all the way up to a submission at the end of the first round. It is his 13th straight win and sixth since entering the ranks of the UFC.

“I just proved I’m the real f***ing deal,” Salkilld said in his postfight interview.

Going into the fight, the conventional wisdom was that the longer and younger Salkilld would need to rely on his striking to hold his own with a top 10 lightweight. Instead, he freely grappled with Gamrot and eventually gained a decisive advantage.

“That’s just how I fight,” Salkilld said. “I don’t care who the f*** you are, I’m going to take it to you and all the aspects where you think you’re safe. I’m not going to be fighting on the back foot the whole time, just jabbing and allowing him to punch and wrestle.”

The win should assure Salkilld of a top 10 ranking at the UFC’s next update. When asked who we wants for his next opponent, after specifically calling out Gamrot in May, Salkilld simply said he wants “someone in the top 5 or close to it.”

Given what the UFC might have on its hands with a 26-year-old Australian whose game suddenly looks like a lot more complete than previously thought, there’s a decent chance the promotion makes that happen.
