On Tuesday night, the Trojans defeated Long Beach State 6-1 at Dedeaux Field. With it, they improved to 16-0, officially breaking the record for best start in program history.
The previous record was held by the 1988 team, which started 15-0. While USC has produced numerous MLB stars over the decades, interestingly, the biggest name on that 1988 team was actually a football player. Former USC All-American quarterback Rodney Peete, who would go on to have a lengthy NFL career, also played baseball for the Trojans, and was a member of the 1988 squad that also opened 15-0. Peete was selected in the MLB Draft four times, but ultimately decided to pursue a professional career in football instead.
Also notably, while USC has sent 21 teams to the College World Series, the 1988 squad was not one of them. This year’s Trojans will look to do another thing that the 1988 team could not and make it to Omaha for the first time since 2001.
