The Carolina Panthers have a growing problem in their secondary. Head coach Dave Canales, though, is not ready to reveal whether the team will seek outside help before the NFL trade deadline. Following Thursday night’s 27-19 loss to the Green Bay Packers, Canales addressed the possibility of a roster move. He also pointed to an internal option who could soon get his opportunity. With several cornerbacks sidelined, Carolina’s depth is facing an increasingly difficult test.

The Panthers entered Lambeau Field without Jaycee Horn, Mike Jackson, and Akayleb Evans. Their situation worsened when Will Lee III exited with a hamstring injury. That left Carolina’s secondary scrambling to adjust their coverage combinations against Jordan Love. According to The Athletic’s Joe Person, Canales deferred questions about potential acquisitions to general manager Dan Morgan. However, he indicated that practice squad cornerback Corey Thornton would get an opportunity “real soon.”

Thornton offers Carolina some intriguing size and familiarity with the defensive scheme. The 6-foot-1 defensive back showed promise before a fibula injury ended his 2025 campaign prematurely. Promoting him could provide a practical short-term solution. However, the Panthers may still need additional reinforcements if their injury situation does not improve.

Carolina’s 2026 season has been a roller coaster. After reaching 3-2 with encouraging performances from Bryce Young and the offense, the Panthers have suffered consecutive losses to Tampa Bay and Green Bay. They now sit at 3-4, with injuries mounting on both sides of the football.

The extended break before Week 9. Whether Carolina makes a trade or promotes Thornton, stabilizing the cornerback room must become a priority if the Panthers hope to remain competitive in the NFC South.
