Boston Celtics coach Joe Mazzulla has found another unconventional tool to improve his coaching methods: artificial intelligence. Known for his unusual approach to basketball, Mazzulla now uses Claude daily to evaluate practices, develop ideas, and challenge his thinking.

The Celtics coach revealed his AI habits during an appearance on Boston’s 98.5 The Sports Hub. His comments were shared by NBACentral on X, offering insight into how technology influences his preparation.

“I use Claude every day for coaching thoughts,” Mazzulla said, explaining that the platform also helps him process psychological challenges.

Mazzulla admitted he has not tried ChatGPT, instead expressing enthusiasm for Claude’s tendency to respond with questions. He believes that approach encourages deeper reflection rather than simply providing answers.

The coach also uses AI to revisit previous practice schedules and determine whether his priorities matched the time allocated to different activities.

For example, Mazzulla questioned whether emphasizing offensive rebounding made sense if it occupied only 5% of a practice plan.

His approach extends to halftime preparation, where he evaluates whether reviewing completed plays always helps players anticipate upcoming situations.

Rather than relying on AI to make decisions, Mazzulla uses it to identify weaknesses in his existing processes.

That philosophy fits a coach who has consistently embraced experimentation throughout his tenure in Boston. His willingness to challenge traditional methods helped shape the Celtics’ championship-winning identity.

Mazzulla also emphasized that technology can help him learn from past decisions and improve his efficiency.

For the Celtics, his daily conversations with Claude represent another attempt to find an advantage beyond conventional basketball preparation.

Whether AI directly improves Boston’s results remains unclear, but Mazzulla appears committed to making it part of his coaching routine.
