It has been a wild season for the Colorado football program, and their head coach Deion Sanders. Things are now even more bizarre. Sanders is downplaying comments made by a friend of his, that said the Colorado head coach would give $50,000 to his critics to silence them.

“That was a joke,” Sanders said, per the Associated Press.

The comments were made by YouTube content creator Christopher Neely, who is also known as “Uncle Neely.” Neely is a friend of Sanders.

“For the most part, the people that attack him wouldn’t be making the money they were making if he wasn’t here to attack,” Neely said in a video. “Which is why he told some of them, ‘Hey man, let’s just do this. I give you $50,000 to not mention my name for a year.’ And ain’t nobody took the deal yet.”

Sanders explained those remarks were all in jest.

“I would never offer a man money. I don’t give a darn what you say about me,” Sanders said. “That was really a joke about someone prospering off of your name and your brand. It’s not in my heart to not like anybody in this room. I may not like some things you may do or say, but I don’t know you enough to form that opinion.

“This is normalcy because I’m just different. I’m unapologetic about things I say and how I live my life.”

Things have been difficult this season for Colorado. The Buffaloes have lost five games in a row, and are dead last in the Big 12 conference standings. Colorado has a 2-5 record on the season.

Sanders is in his fourth season at the school. He has posted two losing seasons in his first three years. Sanders’ seat is hot, according to many analysts in college football.

Colorado will try and snap their losing streak when they play Kansas State on Saturday.
