Best Case, Worst Case, and Most Likely Scenarios for Wisconsin rest of season: What is the ceiling?

Coming off a thrilling home dismantling of the No. 16 USC Trojans, the No. 25 Wisconsin Badgers are back to business this week with a scary Halloween road date with the Hawkeyes waiting for them in Iowa City.

We all know how dominant Iowa has been over Wisconsin in recent years, so a lot will have to change for Fickell’s lads to pull one out on Saturday. But Iowa is only the first stop on a five-game journey for the Badgers to close out the regular season.

I’m going to put my prediction hat on to give you the Best Case, Worst Case, and Most Likely outcomes for where this squad ends up after the Axe is hoisted by some team at Camp Randall in late November.

Best Case

It feels a bit odd to be talking about a shot at double-digit wins (and all the potential spoils that come with it), but here we are. While there are some challenges in Bucky’s last five games, it is possible for them to run the table through this: at Iowa, Rutgers, at Maryland, at Purdue, and Minnesota.

If the Badgers can accomplish this feat, they’ll sit at 10-2 and 8-1 in the Big Ten, which will put it firmly in the College Football Playoff conversation. No, this is absolutely not likely (see below), but it is possible. Dream away!

Record: 10-2

Worst Case
Sorry in advance for ruining the good vibes, but this one is pretty bleak, so prepare yourself.

Here, something, or things, go majorly wrong for the Badgers. Injuries, unexpected performance issues, opponents going bonkers, or some hellish combination of these rise up to kill the team’s momentum and send them limping to the finish.

While I still see a Rutgers home win, this 1-4 slide leaves them at 6-6 and, likely, soon looking for a new coach. Yikes.

Record: 6-6

Most Likely

Now we’ve arrived at the scenario that I actually believe will happen. And to be blunt, I struggled a bit here with choosing between two numbers.

The higher one that I didn’t pick would have required me to endorse this team stumbling only once the rest of the season. If it were only about defense, I probably would have ended up in Best Case territory (see above).

But the very one-dimensional offense Wisconsin seems to be moving forward with has a ceiling that will cap the team’s upside.

Yes, the defense will continue to give the Badgers a shot in every game, but I see a stumble at Iowa and then either at Purdue or against Minnesota, leaving the team with a win total that most would have taken preseason, yet ultimately feels like a bit of a letdown.

Record: 8-4
