Kessler had fit in nicely through his first two games for Los Angeles, averaging 24 points, 8.5 rebounds and four blocks. It had been a welcome sight for a franchise in search of a quality big man in recent years.

Here’s how Kessler reacted to his return back to Utah:

After the game against the Jazz, Kessler admitted that the return did impact him a bit.

He finished with just two points after making just one of his two shot attempts in 28 minutes. He had six of his seven total rebounds come on defense.

"I think going into the game I let my emotions get the best of me,” Kessler said. “But you have to learn in those moments and move on. I’m just glad we got the win tonight … even though it wasn’t my best night I really appreciate (my teammates.)"

Kessler spent the first four years of his NBA career with the Jazz, but was limited to just five games last season due to a left shoulder labral tear.

“Obviously, Utah was the first four years of my career,” Kessler said. “It’s a special place for me. Kind of jumpstarted my career, you know, a lot of good memories.”

The injury required season-ending surgery in November 2025.

Lakers general manager Rob Pelinka and the front office made a trade for Kessler. He signed a four-year, $130 million contract extension after he was traded to Los Angeles. The Lakers had to give up two unprotected first-round picks (2031, 2033) and two first-round pick swaps (2028, 2030) with the Jazz.
