Why trade for veteran edge rusher would boost Patriots' defense

· Yahoo Sports

The New England Patriots have reason to pursue a trade for Arizona Cardinals outside linebacker Josh Sweat to strengthen their defense and improve their chances of making a run to the Super Bowl.

Sweat has recorded a sack, two tackles for loss and three quarterback hits thus far this year. He is coming off of a season in 2025 when he recorded 12 sacks for the Cardinals. He has recorded eight or more sacks in a season three times in his career, including two with 10 or more.

His ability to pressure opposing quarterbacks would provide New England with another valuable weapon along its defensive line.

The Patriots are currently managing without Harold Landry, who is on the Reserve/Physically Unable to Perform list, which has created uncertainty in their pass-rushing unit. Acquiring Sweat would provide the Patriots with additional depth and help the defense remain competitive while Landry works toward returning to action.

Elijah Ponder has played great this season, while Dre’Mont Jones and Gabe Jacas have also performed well. However, adding Sweat might give New England the difference-maker it needs to elevate the defense.

New England has enough talented players and valuable picks to put together an attractive trade package for Sweat. They would gain greatly from making a move of this magnitude to potentially cash in on Sweat's high upside.
