MS Dhoni has addressed questions on his Indian Premier League future with Chennai Super Kings and revealed that he will make up his mind before December this year about his participation in the 2027 edition.

Dhoni sat out the whole of last season with calf trouble and the franchise missed the playoffs without him.

Dhoni appeared at a healthcare event in Bengaluru, where he was asked  about his plans. Speaking on the subject, he remarked that the verdict on whether he can handle one more season in CSK colours would depend strictly on the results of medical tests.

He said: "Doc, I will have to go through the test. You will have to give me the report, and then before December, I will have to see, you know, how strong I am to maybe play one more season."

He then handed the responsibility to the medical team, joking that it would be up to them to keep him in good enough shape to cope with the demands of the tournament over another year.

He added: "And if I am not, then, you know, you will have to make sure that you do everything right with me and make sure that this old vintage vehicle is running well on the road. So all the pressure is on them.”

Will MS Dhoni play IPL 2027?

CSK chief executive Kasi Viswanathan said the final call rests with the wicketkeeper-batter, although he sounded optimistic about the outcome.

He explained that Dhoni usually shares his decision with the management once he arrives in Chennai, and that the club is waiting to hear it from him like everyone else.

"It’s a question you need to ask him. I also have to ask him. He informs us of his decision when he arrives in Chennai. I have a feeling that the chances of him continuing to play for CSK are there. He is still a player, you know," he had said a couple of months back.

His role in the batting line-up has shrunk over the past two years. He now comes in during the closing overs, where his task is to push the total to the maximum, with his world-class power hitting.

Since Ruturaj Gaikwad took over as captain in 2024, the franchise has struggled for consistency. CSK ended at the bottom of the table in IPL 2025, and they could only climb to eighth place in IPL 2026.

Their last title came in 2023 under Dhoni’s leadership, a reminder of how quickly the picture has changed for a team that once looked unbeatable in the closing stages of a season.
