Jordan’s 1998 Finals jersey sets a new record

Jordan wore the red Bulls road jersey on June 5, 1998, when Chicago defeated Utah 93-88 to even the NBA Finals at one game apiece. Jordan dominated the game, scoring 37 points while helping the Bulls secure a crucial victory on the road.

The Bulls ultimately defeated the Jazz in six games to win the 1998 NBA championship, giving Jordan his sixth and final title with Chicago. The 1997-98 season later became the centerpiece of the popular The Last Dance documentary series.

Hunt Auctions facilitated the $14 million private sale and identified Miami real estate investor Ron Firman as the buyer. The jersey was originally purchased directly from the Bulls by a private collector in 2003 and had changed hands only once before the latest transaction.

The price easily surpassed the previous record for basketball memorabilia.

The $14 million sale is particularly remarkable because it is the third Jordan jersey from the 1998 NBA Finals to reach at least $10 million.

Jordan’s Game 1 jersey sold for approximately $10.1 million in 2022, while his Game 3 jersey sold for approximately $12.3 million last month. The latest transaction moved the Game 2 jersey to the top of the basketball memorabilia market.

However, Jordan’s jersey does not hold the overall record for the most expensive game-worn jersey.

That distinction belongs to Babe Ruth. His New York Yankees jersey from Game 3 of the 1932 World Series, associated with his famous “called shot” home run, sold for $24.12 million in 2024.

Still, the $14 million price tag places Jordan’s jersey in rare territory and further demonstrates the lasting financial value of his legacy.

Nearly three decades after Jordan wore the jersey during his final championship run, memorabilia from that iconic season continues to command enormous prices. The latest sale is now the clearest example yet of just how valuable Jordan’s place in basketball history remains.
