Jaron-Keawe Sagapolutele injury update: Cal starts backup QB

California has a new starting quarterback playing under center against Virginia Tech.

The Golden Bears have decided to go with backup quarterback Jackson Brousseau, starting in place of Jaron-Keawe Sagapolutele against the Hokies on Saturday, Oct. 10 at California Memorial Stadium in Berkeley, California.

Sagapolutele has been held out of Cal's Week 6 matchup as he continues to work his back from a concussion he suffered in the Golden Bears' loss to UNLV on Oct. 3.

He was hit and wrestled to the ground, where the sophomore quarterback hit his head on the turf. Sagapolutele tried to remain in the game but he was pulled before he could get another snap off.

Brousseau came in and finished the game with 19-of-32 passes for 200 yards and two touchdowns.

Brousseau will make his first start as a Golden Bear. He started eight games at Colorado State last year.

Cal head coach Tosh Lupoi told reporters last week that Sagapolutele would be considered for Virginia Tech, but he wouldn't rush him back if it wasn't the right health decision.

"We'll reassess everything, health wise, and see where we're at going into this next week. If Jaron's ready to rock, then awesome," Lupoi said on Oct. 3. "But if he has any symptoms, just like any one of our players, we'll reassess there and make sure we're not going to put anyone in harm's way."

Sagapolutele's inactive status suggests that he had lingering symptoms of a concussion.

Kingston Lopa out with concussion

Sagapolutele wasn't the only Cal star to sit out against Virginia Tech.

Defensive back Kingston Lopa, who leads the nation in interceptions, is also out. He, too, suffered a concussion in the Golden Bears' loss against UNLV.

Lopa left the game early against UNLV, last week, with what seemed to be an upper body injury. He was evaluated on the sideline after walking off the field on his own merit. It was later determined that he suffered a concussion and did not return to the game.

Cal trailed 7-0 with 10:22 in the second quarter.
