Deion Sanders Reveals What Colorado Must Fix: ‘We Have One Glaring Problem’

Colorado’s offense had another rough afternoon Saturday, and head coach Deion Sanders was not interested in pretending otherwise after the Colorado Buffaloes’ 29-7 loss to No. 12 Texas Tech Red Raiders.

The Buffaloes stayed within one score deep into the game, but the offense could not keep pace as the Red Raiders pulled away late. Colorado also entered the game with plenty of questions at quarterback after a week in which Sanders did not make the situation completely clear.

Sanders did not spend his postgame comments blaming one player for what went wrong. He pointed to missed chances across the team and said Colorado had to be better when those moments came.

“Everyone in that locker room had an opportunity to make a block, to make a catch to make a throw…to do something. And you’ve got to make it,” Sanders said during his postgame press conference.

That was especially frustrating because Colorado had shown early that it could move the ball. The problem was keeping that level of execution going once Texas Tech adjusted and the game moved deeper into the afternoon.

Sanders was blunt about the result. He said Colorado had been “horrible” and pointed out that scoring only seven points would never be enough to win the game.

The offense has now become a bigger concern as Colorado heads into its bye week. The Buffaloes have struggled to put together consistent drives, and the quarterback situation has added another layer of uncertainty.

Deion Sanders Has One Position in Mind

Sanders was asked what had caused the offensive inconsistency over the last three games. He did not want to spell out the answer for reporters and instead pushed them to draw their own conclusions.

That became more revealing when Sanders was asked about the defense and the overall state of the team. He said Colorado had one “glaring problem” and made clear that it was at quarterback.

“We have one glaring problem. We have to play better at one specific position [quarterback]. That’s it,” Sanders said.

That comment puts even more attention on Colorado’s quarterback situation, which was already one of the biggest questions entering Saturday. Julian Lewis, who started the season as Colorado’s quarterback, did not play against Texas Tech, while Isaac Wilson started.

Sanders did not describe Lewis as permanently out of the competition. Instead, he said the job remains open and that Colorado has three options at the position. Someone simply has to take control of it and perform well enough to keep the job.

The coach also made clear that he was not going to single out Lewis for the loss. He said he was more concerned with the team and did not want to criticize the young quarterback after he was left out of the game.

The quarterback issue was not the only problem. Sanders also pointed to costly defensive penalties and missed opportunities across the team, including plays that could have changed the game.

Texas Tech led only 12-7 entering the fourth quarter before Colorado finally gave way. Sanders credited the Red Raiders with staying consistent and taking advantage of late opportunities when they appeared.

Colorado now has its bye week to work through the problems. Sanders said the team will keep practicing and working, but his comments after the loss made it clear that the quarterback position has become the first issue he wants the Buffaloes to fix.
