One of the greatest pitchers to ever play Major League Baseball is retiring from the game. Detroit Tigers hurler Justin Verlander had an incredibly emotional moment on Saturday, as he made his final start against the Pittsburgh Pirates. Verlander’s daughter came out to pull him from the mound in the sixth inning, which sent Verlander to tears.
The Tigers pitcher then cried again in the postgame press conference, talking about how much it meant to see his daughter there.
“I gave everything for this. I left home when she was in school and I wasn’t there,” Verlander said, per Bleacher Report. “….She means the world to me. My family means the world to me.”

Verlander then broke down into tears while speaking about his family. His response went viral on the Bleacher Report’s Instagram page.
The Tigers would go on to win their game on Saturday against the Pittsburgh Pirates, 4-3. It was an emotional win for Detroit, and an emotional day for Verlander.
“The vibe in the stadium, from the second I walked out there, was just really incredible,” Verlander said, per MLB.com. “It brought back some really fond memories of the days when this ballpark was absolutely raucous every single night.”
Verlander will finish his 2026 season with a 7.00 ERA. He made two starts this season with no victories. He pitched five-plus innings against the Pirates on Saturday, allowing two earned runs and five hits.
The Tigers ace will finish his career with 3,560 strikeouts, after fanning six Pirates batters on Saturday. Verlander has pitched in MLB since the 2005 season. He has pitched for several clubs, but the Tigers clearly are very close to his heart.
Detroit will miss the Major League Baseball Playoffs this season. The Tigers will end their season on Sunday, in another game against the Pirates.
The Tigers are 76-85 on the campaign.
