Transfer quarterback Gavin Huntington-Monroe continues shining for St. Johnsbury

HINESBURG — St. Johnsbury football faced a fourth-down midway through the third quarter at Champlain Valley's 23-yard line. Head coach Rich Alercio opted to keep his offense on the field trusting his sophomore quarterback Gavin Huntington-Monroe.
Huntington-Monroe found his favorite target in Henry Semp. The senior receiver was flanked by two Redhawk defenders, but somehow Semp made the catch and spun away from his defenders for an easy touchdown. That was Huntington-Monroe's fourth touchdown pass of the game.

St. Johnsbury improved to 4-0 with a 42-7 win over Champlain Valley on Saturday, Sept. 26. The Hilltoppers scored touchdowns on its first six drives.
"The quarterback is as accurate as a quarterback I have ever seen," Alercio said. "He can put the ball where it needs to be."
With Huntington-Monroe under center, the Hilltoppers coaching staff has calling more pass plays than in 2025. It's still the same offense with guys such as Semp and running back Kingston Carey each getting their turns replacing players who graduated last school year.
The sophomore quarterback was brilliant again throwing for 357 yards on 22 completions and five touchdowns. Huntington-Monroe moved from Southern California to Vermont to live with his mom Jasmyn Huntington Fletcher and has immediately clicked with his new teammates leading to throwing for over 200 yards in all four games.
"I think everyday we had OTAs and two-a-day (practices) we would have a three-hour period between and every single time we would go to a teammate's house and all bond," Huntington-Monroe said.
Alercio knew Huntington-Monroe would be joining the team in the summer which meant the quarterback had a few months to learn the offense. Huntington-Monroe has been so accurate, he did not take his first sack till Week 4.
"He has high football IQ and really understands offense and defensive structures," Alercio said.
Huntington-Monroe had never lived in Vermont before prior to this summer and immediately bonded with Semp. Against CVU, Semp caught 10 passes for 160 yards and three touchdowns.
"That was my guy," Huntington-Monroe said. "He was one of the guys that came to do a throwing session with and knew he was going to be special."
With Huntington-Monroe's accuracy he has helped take St. Johnsbury to some new heights after advancing to the Division I championship game in 2025.
The only flaw for the Hilltoppers in their quest for a championship could be not having a true kicker. St. Johnsbury failed to convert on any of its extra point or two-point conversion attempts and had four players attempt extra points.
