There was uncertainty at the quarterback position for Alabama State football heading into the SWAC opener against Mississippi Valley State in Week 4.
Alabama Statecoach Eddie Robinson Jr. said starting QB Andrew Body sprained his non-throwing wrist in Week 2's game against Troy. Robinson was non-committal to Body starting against the Delta Devils, saying he'd be a game-time decision.

Body was ruled out ahead of kickoff vs Mississippi Valley State on Saturday, Sept. 26.
Robinson's decision was to keep Body off the field against MVSU, opting to start true freshman Aaron Frye. Here's three things to know about Alabama State's QB2.
Aaron Frye won a Alabama high school state championship his senior year
Before transitioning to Alabama State and Division I college football. Frye led Clay-Chalkville to an AHSAA Class 6A state title win over Saraland in 2025. Frye was named the MVP of the state champioship game after accounting for 350 all-purpose yards and five touchdowns.
Clay-Chalkville went undefeated in 2025 with Frye at QB — and for his efforts, he was named the Alabama Sports Writers Association 6A Player of The Year.
Frye was not a ranked recruit coming out of high school and held five offers during his senior year despite beating teams like nationally ranked Thompson and Alabama commit Trent Seaborn during the regular season in 2025.
Aaron Frye is the first freshman to wear No. 9 for Alabama State football
There's only one No. 9 jersey on Alabama State's roster, and it's a number that has to be earned. It’s a number tied to the history of Alabama State and its foundation built on the perseverance of the nine former enslaved men that started Alabama State. Those men were called the Marion Nine.
There is criteria that has to be met to wear the number, including leadership, personality traits, GPA and community service. The tradition is in its fourth year, and it's the first time Robinson and the coaching staff have given the honor to a true freshman and QB.
Frye was awarded the Marion Nine Perseverance Award and jersey number during Alabama State's spring scrimmage.
Aaron Frye has a brother playing in the SWAC this season
Frye isn't alone playing in the SWAC. He has an older brother playing QB in the conference this season. Ashton Frye is a redshirt senior at Grambling State in the SWAC West.
Ashton played his high school football at Springville in Alabama and was originally at Jacksonville State before transferring to Grambling State.
Alabama State's SWAC opener against MSVU is Aaron's first career college start. The Hornets do not play Grambling State in 2026, and haven't played the Tigers since 2024.
