Benjamin Franklin routs Valley Christian behind Wyler's 4 TD passes

Queen Creek Benjamin Franklin football coach Danny Norris doesn't care if Gavin Wyler is going up against 3A defenses.

"He's not just really good, he's the best quarterback in Arizona," Norris said. "I've been saying that for a long time."

Wyler showed that his coach isn't just pumping his quarterback up in a 35-0 rout of Chandler Valley Christian on Friday night, Sept. 25. Wyler tossed four touchdown passes, three in the first quarter, as the Chargers jumped on the Trojans quickly in the 3A clash.

Wyler is now 29-3 as a varsity starter. This season he's thrown 24 touchdown passes without being intercepted. On Friday, his TD passes went for 26, 3, 49 and 80 yards. He set up his second TD pass with a 28-yard run. He showed off his wheels while passing with precision.

"Last year, we had Talan Speir and Ty Sather (as top receivers)," Norris said. "We were able to hit them with explosive shots. We had to replace them. We didn't just replace them with one or two guys. We replaced them with another five or six guys. Everybody gets to be a part of it. It's an unselfish group."

As Benjamin Franklin (6-0), ranked the No. 1 team in 3A by The Arizona Republic, makes its turn into the second half of the season, there are still big games left. Such as next Thursday, Oct. 1, against Gilbert Christian.

No. 2 Eagar Round Valley, which is unbeaten, will always linger in the back of their minds, after being the only team to defeat the Chargers last year in the 3A final. The teams don't play in the regualr season, but could meet again in the 3A playoffs.

Franklin, however, isn't looking past anybody.

"We're focusing on ourselves," Wyler said. "I think we're going to be the the best team we play. And we're going to be the team that hurts us. So we just have to be composed the whole time and be ourselves."

Benjamin Franklin got the ball first against No. 4 Valley Christian (4-2), and, five plays in, Wyler hit Christian Sorenson with a 26-yard scoring pass.

Valley Christian was without three starters, who had to serve a one-game suspension for leaving the sideline and coming onto the field during a late-game skirmish in the big Crismon win last week. One of those was quarterback Austin Schuder.

Coach Jake Petersen leaned heavily on running back D'Andre Dickerson, who ran the ball 25 times. Quarterback Max Sroufe, a sophomore, made some good throws. But, after leading the Trojans to the Benjamin Franklin 4-yard line with 18 seconds left in the half, he was pressured and intercepted by linebacker Tillman Grant, who helped preserve the shutout.

Grant was named after former Arizona State linebacker Pat Tillman and even wears Tillman's number 42.

"Tillman's been a phenomenal player for us," Norris said. "He's the third Grant brother who has played linebacker for us. Tillman is his own man. He's just so smart."
