CJ West suffered a bone chip in his knee and is headed to the Injured Reserve

The San Francisco 49ers officially announced the signing of Naquan Jones off the Vikings’ practice squad. The team did the same with wide receiver Brandin Cooks.
Cornerback Jakob Robinson was released from the practice squad after the team signed defensive lineman Viliami Fekhoko Jr. That’s because defensive tackle CJ West was placed on injured reserve.

West suffered a bone chip in his knee. Kyle Shanahan said the injury isn’t season-ending, but West will need surgery. “We hope to get him back sometime.”
He appeared out of shape in training camp, and just didn’t have the same kind of power he did as a rookie against the run. If he’s been battling through an injury, that explains it.
Shanahan said West was battling an injury during camp, but didn’t know if this injury was the same or something new. He did say that the injury was bothering West a lot after the game.
The 49ers’ depth went from thin to non-existent, and that was before James Thompson Jr. sustained a high-ankle sprain.
With Thompson and West sidelined, Raheem Morris will rely on players who weren’t on the roster a week ago. San Francisco will likely need to elevate another defensive tackle from the practice squad since they only have three healthy bodies.
Here’s Shanahan on the depleted depth at defensive tackle:
“Any time you have five defensive tackles make the team, and you’re down to two of them through two games, that’s always a concern for anybody. We were able to sign one new guy, and we’ve got three guys on practice squad that’ll be competing to see who is up. We’ve got guys that are in this building. We’ve got to see how those guys step it up.”
The 49ers can only bring back eight players from the injured reserve. Thompson and Demarcus Robinson are candidates to land on the IR. Shanahan said those are “likely” to go on the injured reserve.
Here are the current players on the list:
CB Nate Hobbs (groin)
WR Christian Kirk (calf)
LB Nick Martin (hamstring)
OL Austen Pleasants (knee)
EDGE Sam Okuayinonu (foot)
WR De’Zhaun Stribling (ankle)
DT CJ West (knee)
The following players will not practice on Wednesday:
WR Mike Evans (hip)
DT James Thompson Jr. (ankle)
WR Demarcus Robinson (ankle)
EDGE Romello Height (hand)
EDGE Nick Bosa (vet day)
LB Dre Greenlaw (vet day)
RB Christian McCaffrey (vet day)
LT Trent Williams ((vet day)
Height is still an option to play this week. Shanahan said, “I heard he came out good. There’s an outside chance he can be available.”
Shanahan said that as soon as Brandin Cooks shows he’s one of the five receivers ready to play, he’ll be active. But this is the first day of seeing him, so there are no guarantees. Shanahan mentioned that Cooks has a chance to play at some point over the next couple of weeks. It’s just a matter of how quickly he learns the offense and how he looks during practice.
