Geno Smith has blunt reaction to Jets' overtime loss vs. Packers

The Jets lost their second game to the Green Bay Packers in a 20-17 overtime fashion.

Those are the facts, both in general and to quarterback Geno Smith.

For a chunk of Gang Green's home opener, the Jets looked good on offense. Smith finished the game 27-for-41 passing with 247 yards with a touchdown and no turnovers. In the very end, Smith and offense made mistakes in overtime that were not overcome and the Packers (1-1) took the win.

Starting at their own 30 after electing to receive the ball after winning the overtime coin toss, the Jets' offense only moved backward and punted. That brutal set of miscues is what Smith knows and accepts as the highlight from the outcome.

“We had the lead in the fourth quarter,’’ Smith said. “We’ve just got to close the game better. We had opportunities to close out the game and didn’t capitalize on those.” 

“I don’t really believe in moral victories. We didn’t win the game, and that’s all that matters to me," he added.

It's a blunt and direct response to a demoralizing loss. Hopefully such a reaction will lead to the Jets avoiding such a defeat the rest of this season.

And if such an opportunity does come up, expect Smith to be the one leading the charge. New York head coach Aaron Glenn still backed his quarterback.

“Listen, I trust Geno. I think Geno was doing a solid job. Probably not his best," Glenn said.
