Clemson got back in the win column Saturday night, but it took an unexpected quarterback change, a huge night from Nolan Hauser and a much better defensive performance to get there.

Freshman Tait Reynolds was called into action after Christopher Vizzina suffered a left arm injury and did not return. Reynolds completed 16 of 27 passes for 178 yards and added 36 rushing yards while helping the Tigers finish off a 22-7 victory over Georgia Southern.

Hauser was responsible for 15 of Clemson’s 22 points, tying his career high with five field goals. He connected from 20, 34, 38, 50 and 49 yards and improved to 6-for-6 on the season.

Clemson’s defense responded after struggling against LSU, holding Georgia Southern to just 22 rushing yards and 266 total yards. The Eagles scored only once, on a 42-yard touchdown pass from Max Johnson to Ashton Hollins.

The offense still had plenty of issues. Clemson surrendered 11 tackles for loss, including two sacks, and averaged just 3.8 yards per carry. Gideon Davidson led the Tigers with 62 rushing yards on 14 attempts.

Clemson is now 1-1 heading into next week’s home matchup with North Carolina.
