Washburn football drops contest to Top 10 opponent on the road

MARYVILLE (KSNT) — The 'Bods suffer their first loss of the season.
Washburn football (1-1-1, 0-1 MIAA) fell to the No. 5/7 Northwest Missouri State Bearcats (2-0, 1-0 MIAA) 31-24.

The Bearcats would open the scoring halfway through the first quarter with a 15-yard pass to lead 7-0.
Washburn's Aidan Battle would get the 'Bods on the board in the second with a 36-yard field goal to trail, 7-3.
Northwest Missouri would add two scores to close out the half via a 45-yard rushing touchdown and a 23-yard field goal. The Bearcats lead 17-3.
The Bearcats would pick up where they left off with a six-yard touchdown pass to extend their lead, 24-3.
Washburn would get its first touchdown when Logan Madden connected with Tre Calhoun for 25 yards. About four minutes later, Madden found Calhoun again for nine yards and another touchdown. The Bearcat lead was cut to 24-17.
A one-yard rushing touchdown for NWMSU would give the Bearcats a 31-17 lead to end the third quarter.
The Madden-Calhoun connection continued to shine in the fourth, with a three-yard touchdown. The 'Bods got the game within a score, trailing 31-24.
Washburn would be unable to add any more, losing 31-24.
Madden went 27-for-48 on the day, with 366 yards, three touchdowns and an interception.
Calhoun had nine receptions for 125 yards and two touchdowns. Cam Robinson led the 'Bods on the ground with 13 carries for 58 yards.
Washburn will return home next Saturday to take on Central Oklahoma. Kickoff is set for 12 p.m.
