All-American Missouri running back Ahmad Hardy and backup tailback Malae Fonoti will not play for the Tigers on Friday night against KU in Lawrence, Kansas. Left tackle Cayden Green, however, appears to be set to start.
Mizzou is set to face Kansas at 7 p.m. Friday at David Booth Family Memorial Stadium. The game will air on FOX.
Hardy is still recovering from an offseason gunshot wound that he sustained while attending a concert in May in Mississippi.
Mizzou coach Eli Drinkwitz has previously said that he needs to see Hardy at full-speed practice for at least two weeks before he would consider playing him in a game. The preseason All-American had returned to practice by Tuesday, Drinkwitz said during his weekly press conference Tuesday.
Since the running back has not yet returned to practice, the coach’s two-week timetable for playing consideration also means that Hardy will be expected to miss the Tigers’ Week 3 game against Troy on Sept. 19.
Hardy was spotted at portions of Missouri’s fall camp, but did not appear to be taking part in any team or position drills. The running back was in attendance at Mizzou’s opening game, but he was wearing street clothes on the sideline.
Drinkwitz also announced Tuesday that Fonoti, who took Mizzou’s second-string running back reps behind Jamal Roberts in the Tigers’ season-opening win over Arkansas-Pine Bluff, sustained a non-contact ACL tear in Week 1 and has been ruled out for the remainder of the season.
Houston Christian transfer Xai’Shaun Edwards is now the likely No. 2 in Mizzou’s offensive backfield after Roberts against Kansas.
Green missed Missouri’s opener against Arkansas-Pine Bluff with an undisclosed injury. Sophomore Jack Lange earned the start in Green’s absence, but it looks like the experienced offensive tackle and team captain will be back on the field against the Jayhawks.
During his weekly radio show ‘Tiger Talk’ on Tuesday night, Drinkwitz said Green was a full participant in practice earlier that day.
“There’s no concerns from me about him performing the way he needs to,” Drinkwitz added.
Kansas has two prominent injury concerns for Friday night.
According to multiple reports, starting KU middle linebacker Bam Crouch is doubtful to face Mizzou, and wide receiver Cam Pickett will be a game-time decision.
