Manuel Neuer convinced Jamal Musiala will return to top form for Bayern Munich

Bayern Munich slumped to a 0-0 draw against Schalke at the Veltins Arena in Gelsenkirchen on Saturday, dropping points to the promoted Bundesliga side for the first time since 2017. Vincent Kompany made a small handful of rotations to his starting eleven selection with the Champions League on the horizon midweek, but that shouldn’t take anything away from what was a resolute, organized, and determined defensive performance from Schalke, bolstered by heroics from keeper Loris Karius.

There were still positives for Bayern to take away from the match, one of which was welcoming the return of Jamal Musiala, who came off the bench in the second half to replace Lennart Karl in the 56th minutes. That was Musiala’s first appearance for Bayern ever since he’d been rested following his two, separate collapse incidents during preseason friendlies due to what’s been described as absence seizures. A change in medication was reportedly the reason for those two incidents to have occurred and he’s since switched medication protocols again, hence his absence from Bayern’s first three matches of the season across all competitions.
Thankfully, Musiala completed 34 minutes in Gelsenkirchen without incident as Kompany looks to reintegrate him into the squad. While it was far from his best cameo for Bayern, his teammates are convinced that he’s going to be back to his best in no time, as Manuel Neuer described after the goalless draw.
“We’re all happy that he’s back. We’re convinced that he’ll return to his best form. We’re looking forward to Jamal deciding games for us again,” Bayern’s keeper stressed (via @iMiaSanMia).
It’s certainly a luxury for Kompany to have Musiala back in the squad, especially with the amount of matches coming up with different English Weeks popping up left and right across all competitions. Between the DFB-Pokal first round win at VfL Osnabrück and the draw at Schalke just a few days later, that was really the first time we’d seen rotations from Kompany this season, but it’s a pattern he’ll likely have to follow throughout the season to keep his players as fresh as possible. Having Musiala back in the fold is very much like having a new signing with what he brings to the table and there’s no reason to suggest he won’t be able to start hitting his peak again soon.
