Jaylen Brown’s love for basketball remains intact, but the Philadelphia 76ers star acknowledged that life in the NBA can complicate a relationship that began with pure joy.
During his conversation with Mahershala Ali for The Hollywood Reporter, Brown discussed whether basketball still feels like play after becoming his profession. His answer separated his connection to the sport from the machinery surrounding it.
“The NBA is a little different from just the altruistic love that you develop,” Brown said. “It becomes work.”

Brown learned how to walk while chasing a ball and always wanted to compete at the highest level. Although basketball ultimately provided his clearest path toward success, he said he did not begin playing because he viewed it as an escape.
The game came first. The business arrived later.

Jaylen Brown addresses politics surrounding the NBA
Brown pointed toward the forces that can make professional basketball feel removed from the sport he embraced as a child.
“And then there are politics that exist within the game,” Brown said. “There’s things that get emphasized for entertainment, for bottom lines, for metrics.”
Brown admitted those factors can occasionally weaken some of the enjoyment. However, they cannot erase a connection built long before contracts, scrutiny, and team interests entered the picture.
“I love it so much, it could never really take the love away,” Brown said.
Ali agreed that reaching the top of an industry brings complications and described elite environments as increasingly cutthroat. He argued that people with strong principles must occupy those spaces because their decisions affect everyone else.
For Brown, recognizing the NBA’s politics does not mean rejecting the league or the game. It means protecting the part of basketball that existed before either became a business.
