Detroit Lions head coach Dan Campbellrecently provided an update that will catch fantasy football managers’ attention. Of course, Jahmyr Gibbs is set to lead the running backs in Detroit, but who will be the backup with Isaiah Pacheco injured?

“It’s by committee,” Campbell said, via the Detroit Lions on X, formerly Twitter. “(Sione) Vaki, I see Vaki getting some reps, too, now. I don’t see, like, (Jacob) Saylors is running back two. Saylors brings special teams value… We’ve seen more of him than Vaki in preseason games. Vaki’s had some pretty good reps in practice.

“We know Vaki is a very valuable special teams player, too, but we feel like Vaki is ready to take some of this on as a runner and as a pass-protector, and a receiver. We feel good with any one of those guys in there when (Gibbs) needs a breather.”

Pacheco is currently on the injured reserve. He is dealing with a back injury as well as an MCL sprain. The running back will miss at least four games while on the IR.

With Gibbs leading the way, Vaki and Saylors will seemingly both receive running back two opportunities. Vaki has appeared in 27 total games with the Lions between the past two seasons, but he’s only had seven total carries. His running back workload is likely going to increase this year.

Saylors, meanwhile, made his NFL debut last year with Detroit and had only two carries.

Both players can help out on special teams as well. Now, though, they are set for bigger roles within the offense as running backs.

The Lions are currently preparing for their first game of the new season against the New Orleans Saints on Sunday.
