‘Single saddest thing l’ve ever seen:’ Internet reacts to Rutgers’ loss to UMass

Reaction to Rutgers’ 37-21 loss to UMass came from all quarters of the Internet Thursday night.
From the NFL Memes X/Twitter account to John Fanta to UConn fans, everybody had something to say.

Let’s start with the fact that Rutgers paid UMass $1.55 million for the game and then proceeded to lose to a team on a 16-game losing streak, a team that hadn’t won a game in 677 days.
Oh, and Rutgers lit off a pre-planned fireworks show after the game.
“Rutgers paying UMass $1.5M to play them Week 1 as 30-point favorites only to lose and then set off a pre-planned fireworks show postgame might be the single saddest thing l’ve ever seen,” posted the NFL Memes account, which has 1.5M followers.
Added Bleacher Report: “UMass received $1.55 million to play Rutgers on the road and beat them 37-21 🥴💰
“The Minutemen were on a 16-game losing streak and hadn’t won a game in 677 days 😳”
College basketball broadcaster Fanta posted UMass’s football record the last five years
“UMass in the last five years:

And then he asked UMass fans to dream big after the win.
“On another note, I’d love to hear from a UMass fan about your CFP hopes. Why not dream! Let’s go!”
UConn fans, of course, had a field day, with the HurleyMania account posting what appeared to be texts from Rutgers fans:
“the worst part is this will make it harder to fire Steve Pikiell, who deserves to be in prison.
“Schiano should be fired. Pikiell should be incarcerated.”
Meantime, with NJ.com columnist Steve Politi writing that “Greg Schiano is toast,” the Internet’s attention is already turning to his possible replacements at Rutgers, with names like Corey Hetherman, Charlie Weis Jr. and even Brian Kelly making one list.
In the big picture, Kevin Sweeney of Sports Illustrated also outlined the many problems facing new Rutgers AD Keli Zinn:

- Floundering MBB program under Pikiell with another huge buyout
