However, two regular names, A’ja Wilson and Kelsey Plum, will be absent from this edition of the World Cup. Team USA announced on August 31 that former Las Vegas Aces teammates will not feature. Plum failed to make a recovery from a calf injury and Wilson decided to sit out due to back issues and fatigue.
Team USA head coach Kara Lawson addressed their absence. She claimed that they have “moved on” from their decision and are focused on the team they have in Germany. Fans were divided on her statement.
“She needs to show more empathy. Her response is too transactional,” one fan said.

Lawson expressed gratitude for both Wilson’s and Plum’s achievements with the national team. She also said she would miss them dearly. However, she presented a dedicated front, focused on performing well in the tournament.
“Both of them obviously have been great players for us, and I’ll miss being around them, but ultimately, we’ve kind of moved on… We don’t have time to be worried about who’s not here. We’ve got to really focus on ourselves,” Lawson said.
She also shared that she had not spoken with Wilson. The discussion regarding her decision was led by managing director Sue Bird.
