The Dallas Mavericks are entering the second year of a rebuild following their much-maligned decision to trade away Luka Doncic for a package centered around Anthony Davis. Cooper Flagg is looking like one of the best players in the world in the making, and they are developing a nice young core including recent draftees Morez Johnson Jr. and Sergio de Larrea.

One of the biggest subplots surrounding the Mavericks heading into the 2026-27 season is the eventual return of Kyrie Irving, who hasn’t played since March 2025 after he tore his ACL. Irving took the entirety of the 2025-26 season off to recover, and all indications point to him being healthy to start the new campaign in October.

The greatest player in Mavericks history, Dirk Nowitzki, expressed his excitement over Irving’s eventual return, especially when he is coming back to address Dallas’ biggest roster weakness.

“The most exciting thing is, on the court, what struggled last year for the Mavs were the point guard position. And now you have one of the all-time greats coming back with Kyrie. He had a year off. He should be ready. He should be excited. He watched Cooper for a year so I’m sure in his head, he has a plan on how they’re going to play off each other,” Nowitzki told Joe Trahan of WFAA.

Nowitzki was one of those whose support for the Mavericks franchise ran cold in the aftermath of the team’s decision to trade his good friend Doncic away. But he seems to be buying into this new era for the Mavs following the hiring of Masai Ujiri as team president, Mike Schmitz as general manager, and Dusty May as head coach in a major overhaul for the franchise.

Irving is 34 years of age, and he is coming off a torn ACL, so Mavericks fans may have to temper their expectations. But the offseason is the best time to be excited, as this Mavericks team has a chance to coalesce and even challenge for a play-in spot if everything goes according to plan.
