Dallas Mavericks Could Reportedly Gauge Kyrie Irving’s Trade Value This Upcoming Season, Per Anonymous Exec

The Dallas Mavericks have made it clear they aren’t trying to trade Kyrie Irving this summer. However, according to Sean Deveney of Heavy, their stance could soften later in the 2026-27 season before the February trade deadline.

In his report, an anonymous Western Conference exec said he expects the Dallas Mavericks to play Irving through January to see how he bounces back from a torn ACL after sitting out last season, as the team is focused on getting younger around their franchise cornerstone, Cooper Flagg.

Mandatory Credit: Jerome Miron-Imagn Images“If you have some sense that, OK, we pay him $40 million this year, and next year he opts out, and we can do a two-year deal or a three-year deal at a lesser number, then I think you can do something,” the exec explained. “If he comes back and he is scoring 24, 25 points (per game), then you will have teams willing to give up a first-round pick for him. Maybe more, maybe a young player, too. But with his injury history, I don’t think you give up more than one first.”
As the exec noted, Irving is entering his contract year with the Dallas Mavericks, where he’ll earn around $39.5 million, and the 34-year-old guard can exercise his $42.4 million player option in the summer of 2027.

As the Dallas Mavericks retool their roster under Masai Ujiri, the team will likely explore trading PJ Washington and Daniel Gafford this upcoming season. Washington’s four-year, $90 million deal is about to kick in, while Gafford still has three years and $54 million.
“Gafford will be 28 in October, and with the Mavs focused on getting younger, moving him along has been one of the team’s (plans),” Deveney wrote.
“Like Daniel Gafford, Washington is aging out of the Mavericks’ timeline, as he turns 28 this summer. He’s a stretch 4 who plays good defense, but his shooting has been suspect–he made just 32.5% of his 3s last year. Like Gafford, they’re hoping to get a first-round pick in a deal for him, but the contract is prohibitive, and the production is not worth it,” he added about Washington.
