How Marshall Manning and his former team kept Peyton Manning from a coaching career

· Yahoo Sports

When Peyton Manning retired from the NFL in 2016, many wondered if a future as a head coach or general manager was in the cards.

Back in 2022, Manning answered that interview in an interview with Colin Cowherd.

The short answer: no to both.

Manning's reason for not wanting to be a coach though, had to do with the reaction he got from his son Marshall, who at the time was in sixth grade, and his teammates when Peyton was that team's offensive coordinator.

"I don't see a GM in my future. Coach, I'm the offensive coordinator on my son Marshall's sixth grade football team," Manning said in the interview. "We got beat in overtime on Saturday and a couple of my players asked me why we ran the ball so much in the red zone. So I think coaching in my future is also out because hearing that from a couple of sixth graders was tough.

"Hearing that from a 32-year-old wide receiver or quarterback 'Hey, I haven't gotten the ball. What are you doing?', I think that's out."

With that in mind, don't expect to see Peyton on the sidelines at The Baylor School in Chattanooga as a coach any time soon. Instead, Red Raiders fans will see him on the sideline as a dad or up in the stands somewhere rooting on his son.

Marshall is now a freshman at the school and serves as the team's backup quarterback to Ole Miss four-star commit Keegan Croucher. In the second quarter of Baylor's 38-20 nationally televised win over fellow Super 25 team Brentwood Academy on Aug. 21, Marshall came in for two snaps and completed his only pass attempt for 6 yards.

Going forward, Baylor head coach Erik Kimrey plans to play him at some point in every one of Baylor's games this season. Peyton will get the chance to see all of that firsthand as his dad instead of having to worry about calling any sort of play as his coach.
