Williams is entering his third season following a breakout sophomore campaign where he set a franchise single-season passing record, led an NFL record seven fourth quarter comebacks (including the postseason) while leading Chicago to an 11-6 record, NFC North title and playoff win. That was all in one season with head coach Ben Johnson. Now, all eyes are on Williams this summer as he continues to develop under Johnson and make a huge leap in Year 3.
We’re taking a look at the good, the bad and the noteworthy with Williams from the ninth practice of Bears training camp:
The Good
Saturday's practice featured several situational drills with a heavy red zone focus. During 7-on-7, Williams threw and an incompletion to receiver Rome Odunze before responding with three consecutive touchdowns to tight end Colston Loveland, running back D'Andre Swift and receiver Jahdae Walker, according to Bear Report. While the middle situation periods were struggles for the offense, they ended things on a strong note facing a third-and-10 situation at the 10-yard line tied 10-10. According to Bear Report, "Williams delivered a laser to the back of the endzone, hitting Odunze for a touchdown." (More on that later).
The Bad
It was overall a good day for Williams, but he did have one blemish during red-zone situational work. Rookie safety Dillon Thieneman had his first interception of training camp, where he picked off Williams on a Hail Mary-like heave to rookie receiver Zavion Thomas on fourth-and-6 from the defense's 37-yard line during the final team period, per CHGO. "The defense won that situation: offense trailing 30-20, ball on the defense’s 41, two timeouts, 31 seconds remaining. Thieneman made his pick near the sideline and did a toe tap to complete the play."
The Noteworthy
Practice ended on a strong note with former first-round picks Caleb Williams and Rome Odunze accounting for the play of the day during the end-of-game drill. According to Greg Braggs, Williams "did his Superman thing" when he evaded pressure from Austin Booker and bought time before launching the ball off his back foot from the 30-yard line to Odunze, who hauled in an impressive catch for the "game winner." Adam Hogenoted that the "catch was probably even better than the throw" and Dan Wiederer called the play "jaw-dropping." The Bears are hoping for plenty of that connection during the regular season.
