Football is almost here. In less than 30 days, we’ll once again spend every Saturday riding an emotional roller coaster, letting our moods rise and fall based on the performance of our favorite group of 18 to 22-year-old athletes (or, thanks to today’s college football landscape, maybe a little older than that).
I’m sure most of you have spent the offseason tracking every recruiting commitment, transfer portal addition, and position battle from spring practice until now. Football and professional wrestling both thrive on larger-than-life personalities. It only feels right to blend the two. So before the Illini march into another season, before Memorial Stadium is rocking, and before every third-and-long has us asking ourselves, “Can you smell what Bret Bielema is cooking?”, let’s have a little fun.
Some of these comparisons are based on playing style. Some are built on personality. Others are all about aura. Either way, when the lights come on, the crowd is loud, and it’s time to play the game, every one of these Illini has a wrestling counterpart. Now, let’s hit the entrance music and make our way down the card.
Katin Houser (QB) – Bret Hart
Not the flashiest guy in the room. Technically sound, dependable, and if Illinois wins 9-10 games it’ll be because he did everything right.
Xavier Scott (DB) – Randy Orton
Calm. Patient. Doesn’t waste movement. Then, suddenly… an interception. Like an RKO out of nowhere, he has a knack for making the biggest defensive play when you least expect it.
Matthew Bailey (S) – The Undertaker
Veteran. Feels like he’s been wearing orange and blue forever. Intimidating presence and leadership. He’s also the highest-rated Illini in EA Sports College Football 27, and while that doesn’t guarantee anything, it says plenty about the respect he’s earned.
Ca’Lil Valentine (RB) – Rey Mysterio
Compact, explosive, impossible to get a clean hit on. Doesn’t overpower people, makes them miss and will be fun to watch.
Hudson Clement (WR) – Shawn Michaels
Reliable performer who can steal the show. Doesn’t always look like the biggest star until the lights come on. Expect some highlight reel catches and reliable play.
Jake Renfro (C) – Big Show
A mountain of a human. The kind of guy who wins by simply moving another person against their will.
Jayshon Platt (WR) – Jeff Hardy
Boom-or-bust energy. If he breaks out, it’ll probably be with a spectacular highlight that gets everyone talking.
Bret Bielema – Dusty Rhodes
Son of a plumber. Blue-collar. Doesn’t care how pretty it looks, only that it works. Wants to out tough you for four quarters and make you regret lining up against him.
It’s up to Bret Bielema and company to prove they belong under the brightest lights. The buildup is over. The promos have been cut. The 2026 Fighting Illini are here. Now it’s time to see who can deliver when the bell rings.
