Min Woo Lee suggests what he didn’t like after Scottie Scheffler’s outburst at Memorial

Min Woo Lee has admitted that he had a lot of sympathy for Scottie Scheffler after he let his frustrations boil over during the opening round at the Memorial Tournament earlier this year, suggesting that he was desperately unlucky to have a microphone so close to him.
Scheffler left himself with plenty of work to do just to make the cut at Muirfield Village back in June.

The world number one had won the Memorial Tournament in each of the previous two years. But his hopes of retaining his title this season were all but dashed during the opening round.
Scheffler found the water on the 16th hole on his way to making a double bogey. It turned out that he and Ted Scott had got the wind wrong, and his tee shot ended up bouncing into the lake.

That prompted Scheffler to voice his anger for quite some time. It did appear that the criticism was being directed at Scott, with the 30-year-old potentially blaming his caddie for the mistake.
In fairness, Scott did not seem at all bothered by Scheffler’s outburst. And speaking on the Life on Tour podcast about the incident, Min Woo Lee hinted that fans would probably be surprised just how often that sort of interaction takes place on the PGA Tour.

It was just a really tough day at Memorial, and Memorial’s one of the toughest, I think it’s the toughest golf course outside of the majors. So blow ups happen, and it just looked bad,” he said.
“I don’t think social media and the audience know, ’is this how he treats his caddie?’ I think a lot of players do that, and it’s just unlucky that the microphone was right there taking it all in, which I think, as an audience, you’d like that, you’d want to listen to all that, but as a player and colleague, I wouldn’t want a mic that close to me, just because stuff like that can happen. He’s one of the best players in the world and he’s saying, ‘how can the wind be there and not there?’
“I think caddies are very, very strong-skinned, and they’ve gone through a lot. Sometimes we give them slack and they just have to brush it off. Sometimes they want to yell back at us, but it’s a tough situation. I’m sure a lot of my caddies have wanted to shout back at me.”

There is arguably no one on the PGA Tour who appears to have a better mental game than Scheffler.
Obviously, he has had little to moan about in recent years. However, it is probably the fact that he deals with setbacks so well that he does not get dragged down on the rare occasion that he makes a big mistake.
Interestingly, it seems that Scott had concerns about Scheffler’s attitude before they started working together.
In fact, Scott told Scheffler that he was unsure about caddying for him for that reason. But the youngster’s willingness to work on it helped convince him.
And given how jarring it is when the golfing world sees Scheffler lose his cool, it seems fair to say that he has largely done a good job of alleviating Scott’s initial worries.
