Eala booked her place in the semifinals after defeating Elina Svitolina (6-3, 6-4) on Saturday. Following this win, Washington Spirit players, including Gaines and Élisabeth Tsé, met the tennis player. The Mubadala DC Open posted a video of the players meeting each other on Instagram. Alexandra Eala reflected on reaching the semifinals of the Mubadala DC Open
After defeating Elina Svitolina in the quarterfinals, Alexandra Eala weighed in on her win in the post-match press conference. She spoke about beginning to realize the impact she has on the community she represents. Highlighting the significance of becoming the first Filipina to reach this stage in tennis, she said:
“I think with the platform that I have, it’s important for me to be aware of the impact that I hold. I learned through bits and pieces of what people and the fans themselves tell me, and I understand that I represent a lot. I represent a minority. I’m the first Filipina to make it at this stage in tennis, and that doesn’t just go for the Philippines necessarily, but maybe another nationality or another little girl who maybe didn’t see a pathway before that,” said Alexandra Eala.
She added:
“I’m really grateful for everyone who supports me. They’re the reason I have this platform at the end of the day, and it just adds to how meaningful my job is to me.”
Further speaking about the support of her growing followers, she opened up about the pressure that comes with it, adding:
“I’m a competitive athlete, so there’s pressure, but I think the obligation also comes to myself. I’m a very self-demanding person. I’m a very ambitious person, so I’m definitely happy and welcoming to everyone who wants to support me as well and go along on this journey, but I know that this is my journey first and foremost.”
Alexandra Eala is now set to face Naomi Osaka in the Mubadala DC Open’s semifinal on August 2.
