LeBron James joining the Philadelphia 76ers has made waves across the league as they look like a top-tier championship contender. Of course, the Eastern Conference is loaded with talent, including the defending champions, the New York Knicks.

They just ended a 52-year title drought, and they want to repeat as champions. It will be a much tougher go around this time, as the 76ers have LeBron and their mortal rivals, the Indiana Pacers, have their superstar point guard back healthy.

With the Knicks' victory in the 2026 NBA Finals, people saw how valuable a championship can be for the city of New York. They might have had a lot of struggles over the previous five decades, but the championship was worth it for them.

On the other hand, Philadelphia has not seen an NBA champion since 2001, and that was when they lost to the Los Angeles Lakers. The last time the 76ers themselves won a title was back in 1983 when Julius "Dr. J" Erving and Moses Malone were the star players.

While they might not have as long of a drought as the Knicks had, it might be more meaningful for them. Former All-Star guard Jeff Teague believes that a Philly title might be even bigger than a Knicks one, especially with LeBron being a driving force for the 76ers.

"I think it’ll be bigger than New York. Yeah, if he goes to Philly and wins a championship. That’d be crazy…. I mean, it was lit, but it wasn’t lit. It was lit if you were from New York. Like, I’m saying like the whole world. Bron win, like everybody in the world gonna watch it," Teague said about a potential Philly championship on his Club 520 podcast.

It would be interesting to see how James will play for the 76ers. They have one of the most complete starting lineups in the NBA, but they still have some problems that could be exploited by other contenders. Despite those concerns, they are a contender with the level of talent they have, and they just got LeBron on top of that.
