After the first two knockout matches avoided extra time on late winners, we finally had a match go into penalties. And, of course, a controversial call will be at the center of that.

Germany lost in penalties to Paraguay on Monday in a wild match at Gillette Stadium (Boston Stadium) that saw the four-time World Cup winners score the go-ahead goal in extra time only to have it wiped away by VAR.

That VAR decision will make for an especially long flight after that loss for Germany. But Moroccan referee Jalal Jayed went to the video and agreed with VAR after review.

Here's what happened.

Why Germany's goal was disallowed

In extra time, Jonathan Tah appeared to have given Germany the lead. But VAR signaled to Jayed that Waldemar Anton may have interfered with Orlando Gil's ability to make a save.

Some may have seen the call as soft, but there was contact between Anton and Gil. That was enough to issue the foul and take away the goal.

That decision proved to be decisive as Paraguay went on to win in penalties.

That makes it the third straight World Cup where Germany failed to advance to the Round of 16 after lifting the trophy in 2014.
