While it may not have been smooth-sailing the whole way, the New England Patriots managed to land an ex-Philadelphia Eagles disgruntled star wide receiver and fill a substantial wide receiver void left by Stefon Diggs’ departure.

On Monday, Sports Illustrated's Albert Breer reported that the Patriots outdueled the Buffalo Bills, Los Angeles Chargers and Kansas City Chiefs for the 28-year-old’s services this summer.
“Meanwhile, (A.J.) Brown’s camp gave the Eagles four AFC teams they’d be happy to land with: the Bills, Chargers, Chiefs and Patriots,” Breer wrote.
“The Bills traded for D.J. Moore soon thereafter, taking themselves off the market, while the Chiefs and Chargers didn’t show much interest in a deal, leaving the Patriots, who hadn’t put a first-round pick on the table yet much less a first-rounder and another high pick.
It’s mildly surprising that the Chiefs didn’t make a stronger push for Brown before June. 1. Even if Rashee Rice hadn’t violated his probation and landed himself in hot water off the field, the notion that Patrick Mahomes needs more receiving help in 2026-27 still would have been valid.
Travis Kelce, a tight end, led the Chiefs in receiving yards last season with 851, with Hollywood Brown and Rice finishing with 587 and 571 respectively. Adding another explosive deep threat who can create separation and be a reliable red zone target seemed like a no-brainer decision for the four-time Super Bowl champions.
With the Chiefs missing out on Brown, one of the best options on the market, it’s unlikely a big WR move is on the horizon.
