Outside of first baseman Willson Contreras, outfielder Wilyer Abreu has been the team's most dangerous bat though, so it may have surprised fans when the two-time Gold Glove award winner dropped down a sacrifice bunt in the third inning Thursday vs. the Atlanta Braves.

The bunt moved Ceddanne Rafaela to third base with one out, but he never scored.

"He was bunting for a hit," interim manager Chad Tracy said, according to Red Sox beat writer Christopher Smith of MassLive.com. "Not really an early square. Just off (Chris) Sale, he saw an opportunity and tried it. I liked it, but he did it on his own."

Abreu leads Boston with 60 hits and 11 doubles this season and is second to Contreras in walks (21) and total bases (91).

The 26-year-old didn't record a sacrifice bunt across his first two MLB seasons covering 160 games in 2023 and 2024, had just one last year and Thursday was his first in 54 games this spring.
