Where Matt Campbell lands on CBS Sports’ list of top Power 4 coaches
· Yahoo Sports
Penn State football has produced a long line of successful coaches over the past 60 years. James Franklin was given the honor of leading the program before his firing last season, and now Matt Campbell is getting that same opportunity. Although the two men likely don’t have much of a relationship, their names will be forever tethered because of the controversy surrounding the coaching change.

Campbell had unheralded success at Iowa State before coming over to Penn State, leading the Cyclones to as many winning seasons in 10 years as they had in the 30 years combined before he took over as head coach. Franklin’s time with the Nittany Lions was ultimately connected to his inability to get them close to a national championship, but he flaunted regular season dominance that the team hadn’t experienced in decades.
They are great coaches who both unsurprisingly found themselves on CBS Sports’ list of the top-25 Power Four coaches. There is sure to be some clamoring over Campbell’s placement at No. 16, which is three spots behind Franklin at No. 13.
The rankings are somewhat understandable considering that Penn State’s new coach has never worked for such a big school with this many expectations. He overachieved at Iowa State, but it will be a whole new ball game with the Nittany Lions, as Campbell will have to face much better competition and more pressure.
While you can certainly make the argument that he’s a better coach than Franklin, CBS Sports gives the nod to the latter based on his experience and career success. Campbell has already achieved more in this recruiting cycle than anyone thought possible, so hopefully he continues to shatter expectations and ends up exceeding these rankings.
