The Minnesota Twins recently made the surprising decision to option Royce Lewis to Triple-A. While Lewis struggled in 2026 without question, he still features one of the highest ceilings on the ball club. It did not seem likely that he would be optioned. Nevertheless, Minnesota ultimately made the decision.

Lewis reported to St. Paul on Thursday and spoke to reporters about being optioned to Triple-A, via KSTPSports.
"Great," Lewis said of how he is processing everything. "It's just opportunity. You got to take advantage. And at the end of the day I'm playing baseball, so this is awesome."
Lewis is certainly implementing an optimistic outlook. He wants to make the most of the opportunity to continue playing baseball. Of course, Lewis' goal is to return to the MLB level sooner rather than later. For now, all he can do is take it one game at a time.
Lewis, 26, hit just .163/.261/.279 across 31 games played in 2026. He hit three home runs as well. Lewis was once a top prospect and he has displayed potential in recent years. His struggles during the '26 campaign were undeniable, however.
Perhaps being optioned to Triple-A will allow Lewis to work on bouncing back without the pressure of playing at the MLB level. He can work on specific parts of his game without having to worry too much about statistics.
Lewis can still be an impactful MLB player. The focus for now will be on getting back on track. One would imagine that he will likely return back to MLB at some point this year. His performance at Triple-A will be important to monitor.
Twins Moving Forward After Optioning Royce LewisMinnesota earned a 4-1 win over the Houston Astros on Wednesday. The Twins ultimately clinched a 2-1 series win as a result of Wednesday's victory. At 23-27 overall, the Twins are now in third place in the American League Central standings. They are six games behind the Cleveland Guardians for first place in the division.
On Friday night, the Twins will begin a three-game series with the Red Sox in Boston. Minnesota is hoping to carry its momentum from the Astros series into the Red Sox series. Defeating the Red Sox in Boston is never a simple task regardless of how the team is performing. The Twins will look to get the job done, though.
The Twins and Red Sox game on Friday night is scheduled for 7:10 PM EST in Boston.
