The Detroit Tigers’ starting rotation hasn’t had the best injury luck this season, with their biggest loss being that of two-time Cy Young award winner Tarik Skubal. The two-time All-Star has been out for some time after he had to undergo surgery to remove a loose body from his elbow.

Given that Skubal has been the Tigers’ go-to ace for the last few seasons, notching up 31 wins in his last two campaigns, his absence was a certain loss.
It doesn’t help that one of Detroit’s offseason signings, that being the return of Justin Verlander, hasn’t exactly gotten off to the best start.
The nine-time All-Star only got one game into his return season with Detroit, an appearance that would see him allow five earned runs and two walks, before he would be placed on the 15-day injured list due to left hip inflammation.
Verlander takes to the mound for a simulation game
Justin Verlander threw 60+ pitches in today's four-inning sim game. He struck out three batters but also gave up two homers to Wenceel Pérez and another to Jahmai Jones.

There hasn’t been much progress on the 43-year-old’s progress back from his hip injury, until Wednesday afternoon, when it was reported by The Athletic’s Cody Stavenhagen that Verlander took to the mound for a four-inning simulation game.
Across his time on the mound, Verlander would throw over 60 pitches, striking out three batters, while giving up home runs to the likes of Wenceel Perez and Jahmai Jones.
While this is just a simulation game, it could be a positive sign that the 43-year-old is getting to the point where he could be ready to begin a potential rehab assignment.
